With a relatively decent night's sleep in the bag and a generously sized brunch fuelling the fire, it was time to head to one of Miami's less affluent areas, for the Pawnshop 101: Sunday School for Degenerates day party which was hosted by Made Events. Keeping the taxi driver's warning in mind, and with various shoot out scenes from Hollywood movies and hip hop film clips running around our heads, we rushed over to a dilapidated looking building which we were informed was the club.
After stumbling through a darkened entrance it was surprising to find Mathew Jonson performing to an almost empty room with the few people present too busy hiding from the daylight outside to fully enjoy the music. This rare sight was no fault of Jonson's however but rather that of his inconsiderate peers. A few feet away in the outside courtyard were the uncharitable Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Loco Dice who had rudely decided to start up a three way versus set thus effectively commandeering his audience. With Steve Bug and Adam Beyer peering on from the backstage area, Sven Vath listening in from beside the stage and Damian Lazarus wandering around up to one thing or another, there was an amazing vibe that spread from the DJs to the crowd like that scorching case of herpes the nuns warned you about back in high school. Even the facts that the bar was reduce to its reserves of light beer and that the sun was beating down unrelentingly on lily white skin wasn't enough to stem the day's fun and frivolity. Everyone, DJs, staff and punters included, was having the time of their life and showing no signs of fatigue after a week of partying hard.
Later that night Sven Vath switched over to the other side of the decks to bring a little slice of his Cocoon Empire to the good residents of Miami. To help coerce the crowd at Nocturnal nightclub into some shimmying and shaking he had brought along James Holden whose name was possibly the most common on lineups throughout the week. The brothers Schwarz were also present on the evening with ample supplies of that much loved Tiefschwarz sound. Upstairs on the rooftop Desyn Masiello was warming up the crowds for Balance series buddy Paolo Mojo who was hosting the side party in honour of his new mix CD "Balance 009". In his usual anti-superstar DJ style, Desyn, with huge grin plastered across his face, took the time to find out what it is like in front of the turntables and chatted to a few fans.
