Interview with Eden

Every summer hoards of hedonistic youngsters arrive in Ibiza in search of a summer in the sun. Tempted by the music, glamour and wild Balearic nights they arrive en masse to try their hand at whatever will keep them in food and water for the summer.

All of the major clubs employ a promotions team that are out in the streets night after night trying to tempt the visitors to part with their euros in their club. A hard and difficult job it's a world away from the life of the superstar DJ. Hard work and long hours, working in Ibiza sometimes isn't so glamorous. Higher Frequency talks to Jonnie from Essex, UK, a member of Eden's promotion team and gets the word from the streets of San Antonio.

HigherFrequency (HRFQ) : Why did you want to come out for a season in Ibiza?

Jonnie : I wanted to see the island, spend more time with my girlfriend and concentrate on DJ'ing, I'm playing in the back room at Eden and a couple of other parties around the island.

HRFQ : How did you get the job?

Jonnie : When I arrived here at the beginning of the season I went to The Ship, which is a bar in the West end that's popular with locals. Every year at the beginning of the season they have a big billboard advertising Jobs and accommodation on the island for the summer.

HRFQ : What did you do before in England?

Jonnie : I was mainly club promoting, I had a couple of nights on in my hometown in Essex.

Interview with Eden

HRFQ : What's the best thing about working in Ibiza?

Jonnie : Definitely the weather, its beautiful everyday and it's a much easier way of life out here, much more relaxed.

HRFQ : What's the worst thing about working in Ibiza?

Jonnie : Disorganisation, the relaxed nature of the Spanish does make things difficult sometimes. Also because I'm working I don't get to go to some of the nights.

HRFQ : Do you think you'll be back next year?

Jonnie : No, you just can't earn enough money here. I get just about enough to live on and that's all. Also I think its changing here, cool people just aren't coming here any more and I think its because everybody here is getting greedy, clubs are trying to get too much money, I mean most nights are at least 35 Euros to get in and then you're about 8 or 9 Euros for each drink. People won't keep coming here if they keep getting ripped off.

HRFQ : What are your plans for the rest of the season?

Jonnie : I'm going to quit this job soon and work for space instead putting up posters advertising their events. It's the same pay but only 3 days a week work so I'll have more time to enjoy my summer here!
