Danny Rampling- Never Say Never . . .

Text by Jonty Skrufff (Skrufff.com)

Acid house pioneer Danny Rampling is to spin a special ‘one-off’ set at Ministry Of Sound’s 15th birthday celebrations next month, just nine months after he formally retired from DJing with a series of worldwide farewell gigs.

The Shroom founder and key UK house figure became the first superstar DJ to retire when he held his final farewell party at Turnmills last New Years Eve, telling Skrufff at the time he was quitting to build a new career as a restauranteur.

“In terms of thinking about it, I’ve made the right decision and I’m happy with the way things are turning out. I haven’t woken up in the night in a cold sweat thinking ‘What have I done?’’ said Danny.

“I can’t see myself ever doing a comeback tour, it’s not my style. I’ve made this decision to quit for a perfectly good reason. It is a huge sacrifice to move into this new direction and focus on it and make a success of it,” he added.

“I’m making the most of this year, every minute of it and I’ve got some fantastic gigs lined up; really cool gigs. But never say never, yes.”

Rampling will be playing a special retrospective set at the September 9 event, suggesting he’s also changed his mind about spinning oldies since releasing his triple CD retro album in December last year. Speaking to Skrufff in 2002 he stressed he was vehemently opposed to trying to recreate Shroom, declaring ‘I’d never be able to recreate the magic that was in that room’.

“I’m not one for reunions or retro nights either,” he added, “It was a magical time and there was a connection between a large number of like minded individuals that made that energy work. It wasn’t about one person. There was a whole collection of thoughts and energy that were going around at the time that made it a very remarkable period. It’s best left to history, I’d never try to recreate it,” said Danny.

“I just have very strong, wonderful memories of it that I’ll take to my grave.”
