Basement Jaxx Crowned Kings Of Uncool

Dance-isn't-dead-anymore pop duo Basement Jaxx started promotion for their upcoming Greatest Hits album Singles this week, and employed the surprising tactic of boasting about being massive fans of The Police, Jermaine Stewart and Status Quo when they were young.

"I had a Quo patch on a leather jacket but I don't think I was a very convincing rocker," Simon Ratcliffe told the Guardian, "The jacket was bought by my mum from Marks & Spencers and I had an Adam & The Ants patch too."

"I was a punk for week," vicar's son Felix Buxton added, "I was also a mod for a week and a Goth for a week, just trying to find my tribe."

The Brixton pair's candid honesty validated the views of US house legend Roger Sanchez who last year described the brilliantly marketed Mummy's boys as ''nerdy but nice trainspotters . . . nothing like their manufactured 'cool' images'."

"Back then, they were like 'How do you get your kick drums to sound like that?" Sandwich recalled on meeting them in the mid 90s, "And I was like, 'Dude, I just use a drum machine!" (Mixmag)
