Legislators in Wisconsin have passed a new law making it a crime to require an individual to be implanted with a microchip.
Civil liberties campaigners Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre celebrated the new anti-human chipping law and suggested it could pose serious commercial problems for implant manufacturer Verichip.
"We're not even aware of anyone attempting to forcibly implant microchips into people," Ms Albrecht said in a statement, "That lawmakers felt this legislation was necessary indicates a growing concern that the company's product could pose a serious threat to the public down the road."
The barcode style chips have been linked by many evangelicals to end time Biblical prophecies and recently, Verichip reportedly confirmed they'd been talking to the Pentagon about implanting soldiers to replace dog tag IDs. The company also suggested their products could be used to control immigration in the US and "for enforcement purposes at the employer level", despite regularly insisting the chips are intended for voluntary use only.
The controversial ID implants first popped up in clubland in 2004 when the Baha Beach Club in Barcelona launched a VIP service, offering chipped members queue jumping privileges and quicker bar service.
"The objective of this technology is to bring an ID system to a global level that will destroy the need to carry ID documents and credit cards," club boss Conrad Chase told Spanish news agency EFE News at the time, "The veriChip we implant in the Baja will not only be for the Baja, but is also useful for whatever other enterprise that makes use of this technology."
The club (which opens its new season on June 3) continues to offer VIP Chip membership boasting on their website 'We are the first club of the world who offers you the veri-chip. By using an integrated chip, our VIPS always can identify themselves or pay your drinks without showing any identification' though quite why their VIPs struggle to always identify themselves remains unclear.
