Global Underground selector Danny Howells chatted to Skrufff this week about his passion for wearing panda style kohl makeup and criticised 'normal' DJs who dress down in record company T shirts and jeans.
"If you look back on that New York era of the late 70s and early 80s, people used to make a real effort and go really crazy and that element isn't there so much these days. I'd like to see more of that returning," said Danny.
"I still think it's good fun dressing up. We always encourage clubbers to make an effort to dress up, so why shouldn't the DJs?"
The self-confessed ex-Goth admitted he'd been particularly disappointed by reactions he received at an industry packed party he threw in Miami last year, when he performed in full eye make-up.
"I did an interview with a magazine in the daytime and they said 'we've seen your press shots, we want to do something similar with your eyes, with all the black eyeliner'. After they'd done it I thought, 'fuck it, I'm going to leave it on for the party," said Danny.
"But I was quite pissed off with the reaction I got later; people were like 'fucking hell, is he on drugs?' I was just having a laugh and going out partying. It made me think 'am I in the right business, isn't clubbing about having a laugh, dressing up, having a drink and listening to music?'
