LCD Soundsystem Find Their Edge
New York punk-funk trendsetter James Murphy owned up to being a 'fucking hipster' this week, and added that most of his friends are hipsters too.
"I live in New York City, I run DFA Records, I'm the singer from LCD Soundsystem, I'm a DJ for Chrissakes!," he told the Big Issue. "I get on a plane and play fucking records for money. But much as I loathe it this is my world," he added.
His tongue in cheek assessment reflected the unusually ironic biography accompanying LCD Soundsystem's self titled debut album, which declares 'James Murphy is possibly the most beautiful man to have ever lived.'
"But how does such a beautiful man become a musical genius on par with Beethoven, Bach and early Jethro Tull," it continues. "Well, just like these famous musicians, James was born in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, a city whose residents have historically all scored an 8 or higher on the Hot-or-Not website."
Skrufff man-in-New York Larry Tee, who recruited James' wife Mandy to his now defunct girl group WIT, pinched the 'hipster' term for his New York magazine Uselessm branding the first edition 'the hipster-yuppie-scum issue.
"I think that James is certainly a hipster if he says so, but I think he is making fun of the term," Larry told Skrufff.
"I first heard the hipster yuppie scum term from Mandy, James wife and she says that's what the two of them called the scenesters. But I don't think James is a real hipster because he actually does something," he added.
