Nic Fanciulli Interview

Nic Fanciulli is not only the man behind the “Renaissance presents Nic Fanciulli” series and the burgeoning label Saved Records but he is also one half of the hot production duos Buick Project and Skylark who you’ll most definitely know for their remixes of other artists like Deep Dish and Tiefschwarz.

HigherFrequency managed to get a few words from Nic just before he traveled to Tokyo to celebrate the closing of another successful year.

HigherFrequency (HRFQ) : A few people have been asked to contribute to Renaissance’s series like “The Mix Collection” or “The Masters Series” but you have your very own “Renaissance presents Nic Fanciulli” series. Is that a cool feeling?

Nic Fanciulli : It was amazing to know that you are going to be on the same Dj series that put out people like Sasha & Digweed, Danny Howells & Zabiela. They were one of the first companies to put mix comps on the market, and do it well. As an company they are one of the best people to work for as they love what they do.

HRFQ : You and Andy Chatterley have been doing live Buick Project recently, how’s that been going?

Nic Fanciulli : Its been hard ! I didn't know how hard it was to put a live show together until now. But it’s been worth it and a lot of fun. The feeling is a lot different to DJing as you don't just have to worry about yourself being in time, but all 5 of you. But it’s a great feeling when you pull off a good show. We will be doing more shows in 2007 for sure.

HRFQ : You’ve both also been running your own label Saved Records. How easy has it been recruiting artists to join your label roster?

Nic Fanciulli : It’s been good, the basis of Saved has been round the Buick Project and putting our singles out. On the way we managed to pick up some great music from the likes of James Talk, Audiofly and Majik Johnson. We always make sure that we mix the remixes up, from a deep house artist to a techno one.

HRFQ : Apparently you scored your first residency at Club Class by handing the club manager demo tapes. Are you now looking out for the next Nic Fanciulli whenever someone hands you a demo?

Nic Fanciulli : The good thing about Club Class nights is that we always have a room dedicated to up and coming DJs. We always support this, the rest is down to them to show everyone how good they are.

HRFQ : Demo tape was how you got your first residency but what about your career in general? What’s been the one thing that has helped you succeed?

Nic Fanciulli : I think it was a little different 7/8 years ago because you could make it as a DJ without having to produce. Now I think its really important to have production behind you if you wanna travel the world. Just mainly because people get to play your records and will support you a lot more.

HRFQ : As one half of Skylark you were responsible for remixing Tears for Fears. How did this project come about? Are you a fan or was it strictly business?

Nic Fanciulli : That was just luck!!! I made that just before the music conference 5 years ago. I only gave it to Deep Dish and Pete Tong. It was meant to be a bit of fun for the sunshine, but the label heard it and decided they wanted to put it out. I was a bit worried to start with as I thought it might be a bit cheesy, but people were into it so we let it go.
